Pensacola Trivia 101

Pensacola is the westernmost city in Florida. It's also known as the City of Five Flags. Land of the Hairy People

The name Pensacola comes from a Native American term, Panzacola. It was given to Spanish settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries and loosely translates to the land of the hairy people

Home of the Blue Angels

Since 1955, Sherman's Field in Pensacola has been home to the Blue Angels, the Navy's flight demonstration team. As the Blue Angel's hometown. Pensacola has the honor of being the only city in the United States to host two Blue Angel shows each year: the Pensacola Beach Air Show in July and the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show in November.

World's Largest Artificial Reef

The world's largest artificial reef is located 28 miles south of Pensacola. The 872-foot-aircraft carrier, the USS Oriskany, was sunk there in 2006 when it was decommissioned. It's considered one of the best dives in the world. However, it's a deep-sea dive and requires diver certification.

The Annual Mullet Toss

Pensacola hosts an annual mullet-throwing contest. A cow-chip tossing contest in Oklahoma inspired musician Jimmy Louis, so he decided to run a similar event in Pensacola. With no cow chips available, the mullet — a bony fish — was used as a replacement. This gave birth to the Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss.

Geronimo Lived in Pensacola

Fort Pickens was home to Geronimo, the great Apache leader, after he was captured in 1886. Locals and visitors could pay 50-cents for admission into the Fort to see the leader and his warriors in captivity.

Home of the Bushwhacker

The former owner of the Sandshaker Lounge, Linda Murphy, was inspired by this creamy chocolate frozen drink. She brought it back from the Caribbean in 1977 and introduced it to Pensacola. It's now a Pensacola staple with different flavors developed over time.
